Physics Interview

View in Swedish

DHN: So, for people who may not be familiar with your material, tell us, when did you form the group Physics and how did you meet up?

Physics: Physics was formed 4 years ago. We're old childhood friends who've been playing and writing music since the eighties. For various reasons we became separated for a couple of years, but when we got back together again we decided to take up music again.

DHN: Are your musical tastes very similar?

Physics: More or less. What's more they span over a wide range of musical genres. The fact that we share the same tastes is a great benefit in our production process.

DHN: Where did the name Physics come from?

Physics: A classmate of Mikael's came up with the name. We both decided it was brilliant. Looks nice in writing, we all know it from school that’s why it's easy to remember, and it's all around us in our daily life - that is to say, we're all bound by it's laws.

DHN: Do you DJ?

Physics: Toby did for a while. At the moment we lack the proper gear (no money to buy it, really), otherwise we most certainly would.

DHN: Is there a big Deep house scene in Sweden? ( and is it true what they say about Swedish women ? )

Physics: We're not the right persons to answer that question, since we're more familiar with US, British and French house. However, our notion is that it's not that big a scene, especially not the type of blend we're all about. As far as women go, it's true!!

DHN: Your productions seem to be heavily influenced by Jazz, are you both big fans of this genre?

Physics: Both of us love Jazz, both traditional and modern, if it's not too "intellectual", that is. It's not that we listen to it fanatically, but it's been around us all throughout our childhood. To us jazz represents love for the music, in other words, by including elements of jazz in our own production we're saying that we love what we're doing. In the end we hope that this feeling is conveyed to the listener.

DHN: How long did the album take to complete and did you feel there was a lot of pressure as this was your debut album?

Physics: The album took around 9 months to complete (which I believe is quite a long time, isn’t it?), which seems to reflect that we indeed were pressured by this fact. However, we were quite cool about it, I think. It's been slightly worse afterwards reading all the reviews. Luckily, almost all of them have been great, which of course relieves any pressure. The long production time is due only to our love for details - one should be able to find new things on the third and fourth listening too.

DHN: Is the production process a team effort? Who contributes what?

Physics: Absolutely. We both try to contribute as much as possible, though the independent level might differ depending on the song, It depends on who the basic idea stems from.

DHN: Thanks for that. Before you go, is there anything else you would like to tell us, are there many singles or remixes in the pipeline as well?

Physics: The First Flight album is about to be licensed to labels in Asia and South America amongst others. We're gonna release some new singles on UK and US labels during 2003. We're in the process of planning the follow up album as well. We're also working on our Superstar project, which is more on a down tempo tip.
