Label Profile: Loveslap Recordings (US) In many ways, Loveslap Recordings is a perfect example of how ‘a dash of this, and a little bit of that’ can have a magic result. It’s sound echoes both it’s East and West Coast roots, as well a mixture of sounds from everywhere in between too. Began originally as a bi-coastal collaboration between SF based Jesse Singer and NY based Charles Spencer in 1999, the label has seen over 15 releases already, with music press everywhere giving it the thumbs up.
Loveslap’s approach to each release ensures that there is bound to something to appeal to a wide range of tastes and styles. Their approach is simple and very effective. Each release is given a deep, melodic track (the Love side) and a harder, more driving track (the Slap side). The end result are records that could be described as anything from banging house to the mellowest of grooves, but it’s all deep and it’s all good. The label has wide range of artists on their logs, coming from various musical backgrounds. West Coast favourites Jay J, Miguel Migs, Ra Soul, David Harness, Mauricio Aviles and Julius Papp have all released some of the warmest pulsating bass and sumptuous sounding house for the label. Other artists, who lend their talents to the labels impressive list, include vocalists and producers from Chicago to Detroit and beyond. Stacy Kidd, Nick Santillan, Kelli Hand, Jayms Nylon, Jackie Green, among others, have all contributed, not to mention the delectable Chris Brann, and the labels very own Miss Spank and Charles Spencer. ‘In my Own Language’, Charles Spencer featuring Yshara, ‘Release the Groove’, Julius Papp and ‘How Can I’, Nick Santillan featuring Jackie Green are just an example of some of the tasty treats Loveslap have given us so far. October 2002 saw the second release in highly acclaimed cd series ‘Loveslapped by…’ with a lush mix from the legendary San Francisco DJ, David Harness. Resident DJ at the T- Party, Sunday’s at The Endup, a party that has been going for 28 years. David is one of the most revered DJ’s in the city, adored for his warm, welcoming, yet striking selections. The first in the series, ‘Loveslapped by Julius Papp’, saw a selection into the more musical side of house, ranging from sultry guitar laden melodies to more striking percussive laden grooves. Mauricio Aviles, best known for his ‘Nude Dimensions 2’ on Naked Music, is already set to provide the third cd due out in 2003. Also to be eagerly awaited and definitely not be missed, is SLAP-016, due out in mid- December, from Moulton Studio’s own Chris Lum, with a track entitled ‘Regarding Love’. The label also plans to kick start the new year with a collaboration between Charles Spencer and Mark Alan Grey (Spencer Grey) called ‘Pillow Talk’ featuring a remix by Wamdue.

Artist: Nick Santillan
Title: "Adore"
A1: Wamdue Sweet Mix
B1: Original Mix
Nick Santillan, who has appeared on two other Loveslap Releases ("How
Can I", "Of Your Body"), teams up with Atlanta's Marc-Alan Gray and vocalist
Carrie, to give us a love song that is destined to be a summer classic.
Carrie's infectious vocals rest on top of a slamming rhythm section centered
on guitarist Keith Henderson and bassist Ron Hall. Chris Brann certainly
needs no introduction. His Wamdue mix is a sweet, floating reworking with
subtle strings and keys which melt in and out of the mix. |

Artist: Mr. A.L.I
Title: "Rial"
A1: Flute Mix
B1: Moog Mix
Step into Chicago's jazz institution Green Dolphin Street on any given
Thursday and you will hear a new sound: the sound of house music. Loveslap
Recordings is proud to debut the first release from Green Dolphin Street
residents Mr. A.L.I. featuring a cast of players from Chi-town's legendary
jazz community. Too often house music consists of repetitive loops and
questionable musicianship. Not so on this release! The Moog mix features
a monster solo by Kevin Randolph. The Flute mix brings it home with a
scorching fluting by Mike Levin. Mr. A.L.I. is led by collaborators Jere
McAllister and Vic Lavender. Vic was a member of Glenn Underground's Strictly
Jazz Unit and Jere has worked with numerous Grammy winners. Jere wrote
"Let The Music Move You" for Frankie Knuckles, played keyboards for Michael
Jackson's "Remember the Time", and worked on remixes for Diana Ross, INXS,
and Dajae. His remix of Janet Jackson's "Runaway" is quoted as being one
of her favorites. |
